Mantras

‘Manas’ means ‘mind’ in Hindi. A ‘mantra’ is what helps you to go beyond thinking. Mantras are spiritual texts which have an appeasing, empowering, joyful and healing effect on the singer as well as on the listener. Every culture has its own mantras. You could even say that every individual has his or her own mantras, texts you say repeatedly to yourself which create certain moods and states of being. It shows how important our use of language is.

Some examples of mantras with a positive intention are: ‘Om Namo Bhagavate’ (Hindoeïsm); ‘Allah Hoo Akbar’ (Sufism and Islam); ‘Hallelujah’ (Christianity); ‘He Wana Yo’ (Lakota Indians); ‘Om Mane Padme Hum’ (Tibetan Buddhism). Click here to listen to some of these mantras.

Gayatri

One of the most ancient mantras from India is the Gayatri mantra, which these days is being sung worldwide for the enlightenment of all sentient beings:

Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah

Tat Savitur Varenyam

Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi

Dhiyo Yonah Prachodayat

Throughout all realms of experience that essential nature
illuminating existence is the adorable One
May all sentient beings realize through subtle
and meditative intellect the magnificent brilliance of enlightened awareness

Every week the Gayatri mantra meditation takes place, see agenda.
